Excerpt from Insha'Allah Democracy, © 2017 64th Street Media. Directed by Mohammed Ali Naqvi.

Insha'Allah first played at Sheffield Doc Fest, then at IDFA, DocNYC, Human Rights Watch Film Fest and others. It will air on Starz in the coming months.

I was an Editor on this film, along with acclaimed editor/director Hemal Trivedi (Among the Believers, Saving Face, This is Everything: Gigi Gorgeous) and up-and-coming Pakistani editor Shiraz Mehboob. I was also our Post Supervisor.

This was an immense labor of love for director Mohammed Naqvi, taking many years of shooting with our protagonist, former dictator Pervez Musharraf, now a very sweet grandfatherly friend to Mo. Mo started shooting soon after Musharraf was forced into exile. As Musharraf's life twisted and turned, so did the course of the film. I worked with Mo over two years, restructuring the film entirely several times, and editing most of the film's scenes. I started as an Assistant Editor, and through finishing the film I continued to work as my own AE, doing all post prep work.

All of us are immensely proud of what we produced--a wry satire that explores what makes a military strongman tick, but also goes beyond that, getting at the central paradox of Pakistan's current political environment.

Insha'Allah Democracy is an intimate, personal exploration of the present and past of Pervez Musharraf, one of the world’s most polarizing leaders. A four-star general and former president of Pakistan, Musharraf lives in self-exile in Dubai, longing to return home, but haunted by his legacy as a suspected double-dealer and dictator. Insha'Allah Democracy chronicles Musharraf’s attempt at returning to politics, as Pakistan destabilizes and begins transforming itself into a hard-line Islamic state.
